Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by compromised bone strength that predisposes the affected individual to an increased risk of fracture.
It is a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of tissue typically as a result of hormonal changes or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D. It commonly occurs in elderly women and men and is characterised by compromised bone strength and quality. The bones start to get thinner and more porous with age and the degeneration of bone tissue generally begins at 40 years of age when individuals can no longer replace bone tissue as fast as they lose it. Fractures due to osteoporosis are a major cause of pain, long term disability and loss of independence among older adults. It can also result in premature death.
A New International Report, the Asian Audit by the International Osteoporosis Foundation says over the past 30 years, fractures have gone up threefold in Asia.
